The NC Center for Viticulture and Enology facility serves as a catalyst for the state’s burgeoning wine industry.
With its design inspired by the agrarian landscape of a vineyard and the wine-making process, this center is known for being the first of its kind east of the Mississippi. Serving as a gateway to the North Carolina wine country, the teaching laboratory and demonstration model for the state’s burgeoning wine industry supports a commercially bonded and student-run winery.

Conceptual Design Drivers
The proportions, materiality and details of the facility play off the contrasts between Viticulture (variety, atmospheric fluctuations, uncontrollability, and unpredictability) and Enology (order, control, precision, and rigor) to create an environment that addresses the fascinating wine making process.
